Every belt that leaves our shop started the same way, with a single piece of 100% full-grain leather, a pattern drawn by hand, and a maker who cares whether it's right.
My name is Blythe Epp. I'm the founder, the cutter, the stitcher, and the one who ships your order. Mustang Leather Co is a one-person operation, and that's intentional.
Where It Started
I grew up on a farm, where leather was part of everyday life. We used it often, and I learned early to appreciate the way good leather holds up, works hard, and gets better with use.
I've always had an interest in making things myself, especially the everyday pieces meant to be used, worn, and relied on. That interest eventually led me to leatherwork, where patience, honest materials, and a steady hand can turn a simple hide into something built to last. Mustang Leather Co grew from that kind of work, making the belt I couldn't find: one that would still be on your waist in ten years, looking better than the day it arrived.
The Leather We Use
We use 100% full-grain leather, the highest grade available, cut from the top layer of the hide where the fiber structure is tightest and most durable. It hasn't been sanded or buffed to hide imperfections. Those marks are part of the animal's life, and they're part of your belt's character.
Full-grain leather develops a patina over time. Sunlight, natural oils from your hands, the rhythm of daily wear; they all deepen the color and tighten the surface in ways no finish can replicate. A mass-produced belt gets replaced. A Mustang belt gets broken in.
How We Make It
Every belt is cut, skived, edged, and finished by hand — no assembly line, no shortcuts. Here's what that looks like:
- Selection. Each hide is inspected before cutting. Grain direction, thickness, and character all factor into which section becomes your belt.
- Cutting. Straps are hand-cut to width with a draw gauge, keeping the grain tight and the edges clean.
- Shaping & Skiving. Edges are thinned where needed so hardware sits flush and folds lay flat.
- Tooling or Finishing. Depending on your order — plain, stamped western, or custom — this is where the design work happens.
- Edging & Burnishing. Every edge is beveled, sanded, and burnished smooth by hand. No raw edges leave this shop.
- Hardware & Assembly. Solid brass or steel hardware, set by hand. No rivets hiding sloppy work underneath.
- Final Conditioning & Inspection. The finished belt is conditioned, inspected, and photographed before it ships.
Made to Order
Nothing here sits in a bin waiting to ship. Your belt is made after you order it; cut to your measurements, finished to your spec. That means it fits the way a belt should fit, not the way a size chart guesses it might.
Current lead time is 2–3 weeks from order to shipment. We'll send you a tracking number when it ships. If you need it sooner, reach out before ordering and we'll tell you honestly whether we can make it work.
The Western Heritage
Western leatherwork has a long tradition of function driving form, the tooling patterns, the sturdy hardware, the wide straps built for a working day in the saddle. We carry that forward. Not as a costume, not as a trend. As a craft that deserves to be done properly.
Our aesthetic is rooted in that heritage: clean lines, honest materials, no decoration that doesn't have a reason to be there.
